IHM Compliance for LNG / LPG Carrier Vessels

Vessel-type-specific Inventory of Hazardous Materials guidance for the global LNG and LPG carrier fleet (membrane Mark III, NO96, Moss spheres, Type C). Continuous IHM Part I, II & III maintenance aligned with HKC, EU SRR and MEPC.405(83) — powered by Varuna Sentinels’ VSIMS platform.

LNG / LPG Carrier IHM — Key Compliance Facts

Below are the regulatory and operational pillars every lng / lpg carrier operator should track in 2026 — alongside the universal HKC and EU SRR baselines.

LNG/LPG carriers above 500 GT are in full HKC scope from 26 June 2025.

Cargo-containment system materials (Invar, perlite, polyurethane foam, balsa wood) are unique IHM Part I scope items.

Boil-off-gas (BOG) handling and cargo compressor lubricants require specialised IHM documentation.

LNG carriers are key to the IMO Net-Zero Framework conversation — well-to-wake LCA assessment of LNG fuels is being finalised.

Long operational lives (typically 35-40 years) mean LNG carrier IHM continuous maintenance is particularly long-running.

Vessel-Specific IHM Part I, II & III Scope

LNG/LPG IHM Part I has highly specialised scope: GTT membrane systems (Mark III, NO96) use Invar steel + polyurethane foam + plywood; Moss-type uses aluminium spheres + polyurethane insulation. Each technology has unique IHM Material Declaration requirements. BOG compressors, cargo handling pumps and emergency shutdown systems all require dedicated entries.

How Varuna Sentinels supports lng / lpg carrier fleets

Our cloud-based VSIMS platform delivers continuous IHM Part I maintenance, automated MEPC.405(83)-compliant Material Declarations, vessel-type-specific sampling templates, IHM Part II & III preparation for end-of-life events, and audit-ready evidence packs for Port State Control inspections. We coordinate with your Recognised Organisation, classification society and recycling yard from the first survey to the final IRfRC.

LNG / LPG Carrier IHM — Frequently Asked Questions

Why is LNG carrier IHM so specialised?
Cryogenic cargo containment (-163°C for LNG) requires unique materials: GTT membrane systems use Invar (36% nickel steel), polyurethane foam, plywood and triplex barriers. Moss-type uses aluminium spheres with polyurethane insulation. None of these appear in standard IHM templates — Material Declarations must be obtained directly from cargo system designers.
Do LPG carriers have similar IHM scope to LNG carriers?
LPG carriers (typically Type C cylindrical or fully-pressurised tanks) use carbon steel or stainless steel tanks with simpler insulation. IHM scope is therefore narrower, but cargo system gaskets, valves and refrigeration plant for refrigerated LPG still require dedicated documentation.
How does the IMO Net-Zero Framework affect LNG carriers?
LNG itself is one of the fuels under well-to-wake intensity scrutiny. The IMO LCA Guidelines for marine fuels (final framework expected May 2026) will quantify methane slip and upstream emissions, affecting both LNG carriers and LNG dual-fuel ships of all types.
What about end-of-life recycling for LNG carriers?
LNG carrier recycling is rare given long service lives, but when it occurs, specialised gas-freeing, inert-gas purging, cryogenic insulation removal and Invar/aluminium recovery require yards with specific HKC authorisation. Yard selection should include verified track record on cryogenic vessel recycling.
Do LNG carriers need an LCA on top of IHM?
Yes — increasingly. The Varuna Sentinels VS Life Cycle Assessment Portal aligns with ISO 14040/14044 to model the vessel's full cradle-to-grave footprint including LNG fuel supply chain — supporting CSRD/ESG disclosures and IMO compliance.
